Make the problem, audience and outcome clear enough that unsuitable people can tell the advert is not for them.
HELPING SERVICE BUSINESSES GENERATE MORE OF THE RIGHT ENQUIRIES.
Meta can put your business in front of people before they start comparing providers. I build and manage campaigns around a clear offer, useful leads and what happens after someone gets in touch, rather than simply the lowest CPL in Ads Manager.
A good fit when one new customer is worth reaching
Meta is often treated as an ecommerce platform, but it can also help service businesses generate enquiries, consultations, visits and conversations. The approach is different because the aim is usually to start a useful conversation rather than complete an online purchase.
Meta tends to be more promising when these things are in place:
The right person can quickly understand why the service is relevant to them, even if they were not actively searching at that moment.
There is enough value in a new customer to pay for leads, follow them up properly and still leave room for the business.
People are given a sensible reason to enquire without vague promises, forced urgency or a race to the lowest price.
New enquiries are contacted promptly, and the business keeps a simple record of appointments, quotes and sales.
Meta and Google can play different roles
Google Ads reaches people who are already searching. Meta can reach relevant people earlier and give the business another route beyond the same keywords every competitor is bidding on.
Someone searches for the service, compares options and may be ready to act. The traffic can be valuable, but the available volume and cost depend on how many people are searching and how competitive the market is.
The advert puts a relevant problem, outcome or offer in front of people who may recognise the need before opening a search engine.
Search leads often arrive later in the buying journey, which can improve immediate intent but also creates direct competition with several providers.
Strong campaigns start the conversation before the decision becomes a simple comparison of prices, reviews and response times.
For many businesses, the best answer is not choosing one platform. It is understanding what each is good at and where the budget is producing useful enquiries and customers.
Start with a few basic numbers
A £20 lead could be too expensive for one business and excellent for another. It depends on what a customer is worth, the cost of delivering the work and how many enquiries become customers.
Rough break-even CPL
This is a rough upper limit, not the CPL you should aim for. A healthy campaign needs room for overhead, management costs, imperfect tracking and profit.
Use the Free CalculatorBetter leads come from the whole journey
Low-quality enquiries are rarely fixed by adding another form question. The audience, message, form or page and the follow-up all need to work together.
Ask only the questions that genuinely help identify whether someone is a good fit.
Contact leads while the enquiry is still fresh, with a process that feels helpful rather than like an unexpected cold call.
Use appointments, useful conversations, quotes and sales to guide decisions, not just the number of forms submitted.
Instant form or landing page?
There is no universal winner. The right route depends on how much explanation the service needs and how much friction is useful.
Useful when the proposition is easy to understand and speed matters. They reduce friction, work well on mobile and can generate volume quickly, but the form and follow-up process must protect quality.
Better when the service requires trust, evidence, detail or a more considered decision. They allow stronger qualification and measurement, but every additional step can reduce conversion.
The advert helps find the right people
Modern Meta campaigns often need less complicated targeting than businesses expect. The advert itself helps people understand whether the message is relevant to them.
- Show the customer, problem, environment or outcome immediately
- Use language specific enough to attract the right enquiry
- Make the next step and qualification expectations clear
- Test genuinely different messages rather than changing a colour or headline and calling it a new advert
- Judge adverts by the quality of the enquiries and what happened next, not click-through rate alone
How a podcast found more suitable guests at 69p per lead
Wisdom of the Ages needed more high-quality guests from a broader range of backgrounds. A focused Meta campaign generated more suitable applicants in a couple of days than a month of personal outreach.
“Layton managed to find more high-quality guests in a couple of days than I had through an entire month of personal outreach. Best of all, the cost per lead was around 69p.”Read the full case study →

Where it can work
The important question is whether the right people can recognise the need, understand the value and take a clear next step.
When Meta may not be the right next step
Meta is unlikely to solve a weak offer, very tight margins, slow follow-up or a lack of visibility on whether leads became customers. It may also be the wrong priority when people need the service urgently and almost always begin with a search.
I would rather point those limitations out early than recommend Meta simply because it is the service being discussed.
Frequently asked questions
Do Meta Ads really work for service businesses?
They can work very well when the service has sufficient customer value, a recognisable problem, a credible offer, prompt follow-up and a way to measure quality beyond the initial lead.
Are Meta leads lower quality than Google leads?
Not inherently. Google often captures people with more immediate intent, while Meta reaches them earlier. The offer, creative, form, landing page and sales process have a greater impact on quality than the platform name alone.
How much should we spend?
Start with the economics rather than an arbitrary platform minimum. Estimate the maximum sustainable CPL, then choose a budget capable of generating enough leads to evaluate quality and performance. The free calculator helps with the first part.
Should we use broad targeting?
Often, yes, within sensible location and eligibility controls. Strong creative and reliable conversion data can give Meta useful signals without dozens of narrow interest groups.
Do we need video?
No. Video can be effective, but clear static creative, real photography, testimonials and problem-led messages can also work. The format should suit the service and available evidence.
Should we use an instant form or landing page?
Instant forms reduce friction; landing pages create more space for context and qualification. I choose based on the service complexity, customer value, conversion data and lead-quality feedback.
Can Meta work for high-ticket services?
Yes, but the campaign should be judged against qualified conversations, appointments, opportunities and sales, rather than whether every lead buys immediately.
How quickly should leads be contacted?
As quickly as the business can respond properly. The longer a new enquiry waits, the more likely the original motivation disappears or another provider reaches them first.
Can Meta run alongside Google Ads?
Yes. Google can capture active demand while Meta reaches relevant people earlier and creates opportunities beyond the available search volume.
Do you work with UK and US businesses?
Yes. I work remotely with service businesses across the UK, USA and other English-speaking markets.
